Self-Regulation Adjusted @ B.C. Alternate Education Association: Challenge & Change 2014 Conference
Feb 21 @ 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm

The basis of many of the psychological conditions for which people seek help is dysregulation of the nervous system. This presentation will outline some of the last decade’s research on the brain and the nervous system and enable educators to better understand self-regulation as the capacity to move flexibly through challenging life events, and resilience as the capacity to recover quickly from negative events. Participants will be introduced to the essential skill of tracking activation in their nervous system and how new work in traumatology applies to their work with students.

Treating Trauma with a Somatically-Based and Attachment-Informed Psychotherapy: Foundational Skills for Therapists @ HeartQuest Holistic Wellness Centre
Mar 4 @ 9:30 am – Mar 5 @ 4:30 pm

Instructor: Ron Manley, Ph.D., Psychologist (#0866)

Trauma typically results in activation held in the nervous system and the discharge and settling of this somatic hyper/hypo-arousal may be critical to recovery. However, the body has traditionally been undervalued in the “talking cure”. A somatic or “bottom up” way of working can provide therapists with a more integrative approach that also utilizes cognitive or “top down” methods. Additionally, an attachment-informed psychotherapy can guide therapists in navigating therapeutic enactments.

This two-day workshop will provide a foundation for therapists interested in new understandings about the brain, nervous system, trauma, and attachment, and how to translate these findings directly into their clinical work. We will discuss the work of Dan Siegel, Rick Hanson, Peter Fonagy, Allan Schore, Peter Levine, Pat Ogden, David Wallin, and others, focusing on the foundational skills of attunement in psychotherapy, “evolved embodiment”, tracking one’s own and the client’s nervous system, exploring your own attachment dynamics, and the development of compassion in oneself and in clients.

The workshop will involve a combination of teaching, demonstration, discussion, practice, and experiential exercises.

Earned Secure Attachment and a Liberated Spirituality @ Banyen Books & Sound
Feb 6 @ 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm

In this presentation we will discuss Interpersonal Neurobiology, a current neuroscience understanding of trauma, andsecure and insecure attachment ways of being-in-the-world. “Spiritual bypassing” may represent efforts to manage dysregulation in the nervous system, and may manifest in several ways including endless spiritual “seeking” and various aspects of “spiritual materialism” (Trungpa, 2002). It is proposed that working towards an “earned” secure attachment may promote a “liberated” spirituality, that is, one free of such bypassing, and that there are likely several routes to such an embodiment of security.  We will encourge a sense of curiosity in our exploration of the relationships between spirituality, attachment theory, trauma, somatically-oriented psychotherapy, mindfulness, and nondual realization. The talk will be an elaboration of a presentation by Ron at the Science and Nonduality Conference in Italy in 2017.
