Trauma typically results in activation held in the nervous system and the discharge and settling of this somatic hyper/hypo-arousal may be critical to recovery. However, the body has traditionally been undervalued in the “talking cure”. A somatic or “bottom up” way of working can provide therapists with a more integrative approach that also utilizes cognitive or “top down” methods. Additionally, an attachment-informed psychotherapy can guide therapists in navigating therapeutic enactments.

This two-day workshop will provide a foundation for therapists interested in new understandings about the brain, nervous system, trauma, and attachment, and how to translate these findings directly into their clinical work. We will discuss the work of Dan Siegel, Rick Hanson, Peter Fonagy, Allan Schore, Peter Levine, Pat Ogden, David Wallin, and others, focusing on the foundational skills of attunement in psychotherapy, “evolved embodiment”, tracking one’s own and the client’s nervous system, exploring your own attachment dynamics, and the development of compassion in oneself and in clients.

The workshop will involve a combination of teaching, demonstration, discussion, practice, and experiential exercises.
